How Airbnb hosts can protect themselves using background searches

We all love easy and affordable places to stay, it makes travelling that much more easier. That’s why we all love Airbnb. You get what you need for what you can afford, with virtually no hassle. It lets you let out your spare rooms, spare apartments, and spare seaside holiday homes so you can side hustle with ease. That’s why we all love Airbnb. It’s never been so easy to let out those spare spaces and it’s never been so easy to rent them. As with all business ventures there are potential pitfalls to being an Airbnb host. Mainly, the guests. While they’re mostly not bad, there are those who will destroy your rental, steal from you, or even try to scam you. This is why it’s so important to know who you’re hosting, because why should you have to pay the damages someone else has caused? Just messaging your guest and asking some screening questions isn’t enough - only a comprehensive background check will give you the information you need.

What is a background check?

A background check is a “report contains a person’s history”. This includes their credit history, personal information, criminal records, driving records, employment history and such. Background checks search through databases to get information, so everything is public record if you’re worried about the legalities of a search. Basically, a background search is just a really thorough Google search. Instead of you clicking through sites trying to Sherlock your way to finding out a person’s true identity, it does it for you. For the sake of a few minutes, you can give yourself peace of mind as a host knowing that you’re renting to the best guests you can.

Where can I do a background check?

So, how can you do one? Do you need to rent out a private investigator? Do you need to pay for some dark web search engine? Well, while this is dramatic and a fun thing to imagine, it’s not quite as Noir-esque as you’re thinking. You can actually just use an online background check service, or you can do one yourself.

Do a background check yourself

You can do a background check for free, yourself! It’s actually much easier than you’d expect, so here’s an overview.

Social Media Sites

Social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram are great for finding out information about people. Just type in ‘ “Sam Jones”’ to Google and you’ll see tagged posts, profile pictures and more. You can do this for other platforms as well.

Public Record and Criminal Record Databases

Records such as marriage licenses, death certificates, criminal history are all available online through public databases. Use a virtual crawler like Google People Search to comb through the data to find what you need.

Background check services

If you don’t want to try and sleuth out who is who yourself, you can always use an online background check service. They’re comprehensive and simple to use, so you’ll be saving time and gaining peace of mind if you use one to screen your guests.

This is a simple and popular search engine that, with just a first and last name, can uncover any data online about anyone.

KidGuard People Search

KidGuard’s People Search uses a protected SSL server, so you’re searches are safe if you’re worried about doing one. It also lets you look up a person via their mobile number, so if you don’t think your guest is giving your their real name this can verify it, for you own peace of mind.

PeopleLooker is a search engine like TruthFinder. It’s easy and simple to use, taking a few minutes to find out information that would take you days if you do it yourself.

This people search engine lets you look up addresses, more IRL and email, as well as names. It’s fast and simple and easy to use for anyone.

BeenVerified collects public data about anyone you search within minutes. You can search via names, email address, or mobile number.

Stay safe, do a background check!

At a bare bones level, all the online background check services are the same. They find any information available for you with the name of whomever your searching, or with their address, or phone number, or whatever. It’s more easier to protect yourself and your property than ever. So, if your an Airbnb host with some reservations about hosting? Definitely do a background check on your potential guests. There’s absolutely no reason why you should have to suffer bad guests when you can protect yourself by doing a quick and easy background check!
